The Physics Department is happy to welcome you back to the 2021-2022 academic year. This fall we are particularly excited to announce the arrival of a new professor, Dr. Eunja Kim, who has long-standing research interests in energy sciences. We are also excited to alert you about several new course developments, by Dr. Bañuelos, Dr. C. Li, Dr. J. Munoz and Dr. Y. Shim that are designed to allow students to begin alternative learning paths that better connect societal needs to freshman physics, update experimental laboratory classes to encourage new experiential learning, and provide early exposure of students to quantum science and computing. We also encourage physics majors who may be interesting in TA-ships as undergraduates, or simply wish to prepare for post-undergraduate teaching, to look at the physics pedagogy class that is taught by Dr. S. The Physics Department at the University of Texas at El Paso currently enrolls more than 120 graduate and undergraduate students. The department offers a B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics and participates in the multidisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Materials Science and Engineering, Computational Science, and Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The department has active research programs in condensed matter, atomic and molecular physics, quantum science and computing, environmental and nuclear physics, astrophysics, and physics education. Physics faculty and students benefit from state-of-the-art research laboratories that allow structure-property investigations, optical spectroscopy and microscopy, as well as high-resolution imaging. The department also boasts exceptional computational facilities. The department has 16 faculty members and grants in excess of $100K per year per faculty member. Physics majors are encouraged to begin their research careers in their sophomore years and many mechanisms for paid research activities are available.
